Welcome to The Florida Baby House

Florida Baby House is a safe-house and functions, by law, under the auspices of the AFM Executive Welfare Council (uMephi).

UMephi is a government subsidized Children's Village and has been in existence since 1977. It's a radical departure from the old institutional / dormitory concept. House parents care for the children in houses or baby units in different areas of South Africa. Each home is specially equipped to give the special care every child needs.

  • The Florida Baby Home opened its doors 7 years ago and is under the care of dedicated house parents, supported by a team of 8 trained baby care givers. This means that at any time, there are at least two baby care givers on duty.
  • Our baby home offers a safe accommodation and a loving environment to babies found abandoned affected and/or infected with HIV/AIDS.
  • The babies receive holistic care, ensuring their emotional, medical, educational, nutritional and social needs are met completely.
  • We believe that the 1st prize for every child is to grow up with his or her biological parents or family therefore our in-house social worker ensures that everything possible is done to allocate these families and reunite them.
  • Our Ultimate Focus is to find FOREVER FAMILIES for our very special babies.
  • We are very dependent on the assistance from our local community and volunteers to help make life a little easier for these little ones.
  • The home has been running at full capacity for the past 3 years; securing the safety of 50 babies, including 22 International adoptions, 1 national adoption and 5 babies moving to toddler homes.

Help us fill the hole in 'Baby Z's heart

baby z needs a heart operation

If you've visited us lately you will know that the issue that lies the heaviest on our hearts at the moment is little baby Z's life-saving heart operation.

We received great news today!! After a consultation with the Pediatric Cardiologist, Dr Lindy Mitchell,  Baby Z has been accepted by the Walter Sisulu Pediatric Cardiac Foundation and is now on the waiting list to have her operation done.

This is wonderful news and fills our house with happiness and hope.  The Walter Sisulu Pediatric Cardiac Foundation still needs to find funding for this operation and we are asking you to please help us to save the life of Baby Z.

They made is super easy to make a donation, either a direct eft - click here for their banking details -  or sms the word 'Believe' to 42400 to make a R30 donation.

Praying for the baby stolen from a shelter in Berea Johannesburg

Please keep the baby stolen from the Door of Hope shelter in Berea in your prayers.
The month-old baby was stolen from their house of safety yesterday.
We can not imagine how shattered we would be is something like that happened at the Florida Baby House.

News reports suspect that the woman who stole the baby knew the baby and was not stealing just any random baby.

Hello to all our baby house friends.

It has been a while but I'll give you a nice update of what has been happening at the Florida baby House during the month of February.

2011 has started with a BANG!

Five babies were adopted from our baby house during November and December by new loving parents.

Two new born babies arrived on Christmas eve on our doorstep and we felt  fortunate to look after them for their first Christmas and until their they find their own permanent loving family.

Thank you so much to all the individuals that got into the spirit of giving and helping us out with food and clothing donations over the festive season.
Happy new year everybody!
